Home Palm Oil
Palm oil is one of three oils that are derived from palm trees. They are palm oil, coconut oil and palm kernel oil. The palm oil itself is from the fruit of the oil palm Elaeis guineensis . It is one of the few highly saturated vegetable fats. It is most commonly used in cooking in Southeast Asia and the tropical belt of Africa, because of its lower cost and highly oxidative stability.Palm oil has a large variety of uses, past , present and future. In World War II it was mixed with naphtha to produce napalm. Today it used in everything from beauty products, processed foods and vegetable oils. It is also being developed to create biodiesel.
At first glance, you may be thinking what a wonderful versatile plant. Well, my intention here is to open a few eyes. First, as to your personal health palm oil is shown to "Promote heat disease " according to the United States Center for Science in the public
interest. There are several other studies that concur with this assessment including the World Health Organization (WHO). Palm Oil is used as a substitute for hard animal fats such as butter and lard. It is expected to increase in usage as people are looking for lower trans fat content in their foods. While the usage is less in the US than that many other countries, there are many companies that have chosen to use Palm Oil as a cheaper alternative to soy, canola and other oils that are much safer for human consumption.
Now for the bigger problem with palm oil.
Palm oil is a huge business. It is decreasingly grown by the natives. Big business has virtually taken over the farming of Palm Oil. Almost all Palm Oil is grown in either Malaysia or Indonesia on industrial plantations. In Indonesia, large conglomerates own half of the plantations in the form of private companies they own. The rest is owned by the state (17 percent) leaving only 33 percent for the local farmer, who usually own a few acres in a large company's plantation. They have to tend their own oil palm trees, but they have to depend on the plantation owners for everything from planting, fertilizers and pesticides, to the sale of the palm fruits, which of course is at the price set by the large company.
The palm oil industry is expanding due to the economical aspects of the production. It has a much higher yield than either soy or canola. Sometimes as high as 10 times higher yield. Add to that the fact that it is grown in countries where labor and production cost are veryinexpensive and you can see the economical attractiveness of the product. According to the FAO, the Food and Agriculture Organization, palm oil has increased in Indonesia 400% from 1994-2004. Indonesia has now surpassed Malaysia in the production of Palm Oil.
In his book titled World Agriculture and the Environment Jason Clay stated that "Palm oil production has been documented as a cause of substantial and often irreversible damage to the natural environment. " Irreversible damage! Environmental groups, such as Greenpeace claim that the deforestation cause by making way for Palm Oil plantations is far more damaging for the climate than the benefits gained by switching to biofuel. It has impacted deforestation, loss of habitat for the Critically endangered species such as the Orangutan, and significant increases in greenhouse gas emissions.
I want to clarify what it means to be critically endangered. This is not a term I use lightly. The International Union for Conservation (IUCN) is the world's main authority on conservation status of all species. They are THE AUTHORITY on the status of all endangered creatures of the world from molds and fungi all the way through mammals. They publish lists that include extinct, extinct in the wild, all the way through least concern. To rank in the ICUN red list for critically endangered it means that a species have decreased, or will decrease, by 80% within three generations, not our generations, theirs. It is the class just below extinct in the wild. There are several reason why the Orangutan natural habitats are disappearing and the speed the habitat is disappearing is increasing rapidly in the last decade. The major factor in this rapid increase is the conversion of vast areas of tropical rainforest to oil palm plantations. Some UN scientist believes that these palm oil plantations could lead to irreparable damage to the Orangutan habitat by the year 2012. Although there are national parks set up to preserve the rainforests, many of these areas are also being illegally used. They used by these large companies and are being logged, mined and used for plantation development. There are several organization working forvthe rescue, rehabilitation and reintroduction of the Orangutan, but if the entire natural habitat is gone where are they to reintroduce the Orangutan? They are doing wonderful work with these animals but if we continue to buy these products and support this practice what are they to do with these wonderful animals. I am personally pledging to check my home for products that contain palm oil and not to support these companies that choose to put the survival of this wonderful species, along with several others, above
their bottom line. Will you do this one thing to help yourself and your environment? If you would like to read a more extensive study on this issue written by two PhD's you can do so here. pdf on Palm OilPlease keep in mind this is not something that a few zealots are saying may happen in the next hundred years. These Orangutans only have natural habitats in these two countries and reputable sources are saying that these natural habitats WILL be gone in 2012, if something doesn't change. Not 2112 but 2012, less than 2 years from now.
Please take this seriously. I am including a page which lists many of the companies and individual items that contain palm oil. Please take a look. I am printing out a few copies of the list myself and giving them to my closest neighbors and asking them to
join me in pledging not to purchase these items. You can go to the list HERETue best way to send a message to a company is to stop buying their product. It will be better for your health and may make the difference to an entire species. They don't have long. Let's act quickly and send our message that we will not support this type of behavior just so they can save a bit of money in producing their product. They thought no one would notice their total irresponsibility in these two small third world countries. Show them how wrong they are. Make our voices heard, better yet, hit them where it hurts, in their wallets!
